Jaboticaba is a fruit produced by Jabuticaba tree in Southeastern Brazil. Jaboticaba is derived from Tupi term “Jabotim” and it means “fat like turtle” because of its fruit pulp. It’s a slow growing small bushy tree or a shrub. Its maximum height is about 12 – 45 feet. These trees are abundantly branched, emerging near the ground and inclining upwards and outwards so that the thick, rounded crown may accomplish an eventual extend as wide as according to its height. Jaboticaba fruit tree produces fruit straight away on its trunk. Its fruit is black in color with thin but hard skin and almost looking like grape with sweet and fragrant flavor. The average size of its fruit is 1 inch in thickness and can go up to ¾ to 1-1/2 inches. The fruits are produced in bunches or even singly all over the trunk and branches from the ground. The fruit consists of 1 to 4 small seeds. This tree can produce fruit 5 times per year from spring to autumn. Delicious jam, jellies and even wine is made with its fresh fruit.

Jaboticaba trees grow well in sun or some shade and they easily fit into any part of the garden due to their small size. They are really wind accepting plants.
